Braids are very popular and can be seen being carried by people all over the world, especially those of African descent. Celebrities like Beyonce and Rihanna are just some of the many famous people sporting braids and inspiring normal everyday women to do the same.

Braiding, in fact, is more than just a fashion statement. It has a cultural significance that goes way beyond beauty and fashion. Braiding is said to have originated all the way back to 3500 B.C. People in Africa have been braiding for many centuries and this tradition has been carried forth to this day.

The styles of braiding have evolved through the years, but back then, each type of braid was distinct to particular tribe. Your braids can communicate which tribe you belonged to, along with your age, status or religion.

Like these days, braiding was a way of socialization among people in the tribe. It encouraged bonding and mutual cooperation between two people. If you’ve had your hair braided by a friend or a relative before, you know that the time it took for your braids to be completed was time well spent in catching up or getting to know each other better.

Your braids not only carry cultural significance, but they are also a form of creative self expression. It is an art form that is unique to our heritage as descendants from Africa.

If you’re already sporting braids or thinking of getting them, think of the rich history that comes with it and celebrate your African culture by carrying them with pride.
